Caldwell Fire Control Build and Features

The FCX’s Fire Control system allows it to be possible to make surgically precise changes, both horizontally and vertically. These changes provide a perfect alignment of its sights with the target. All in an incredibly comfortable way, using a control arm (joystick). The tension of the joystick is fully adjustable and can hold the rifle in any position. At 90-100 yards, the control arm joystick allows up to five feet of movement in any direction. Coarse adjustments are provided at the front of the rest by a four-inch tall column geared for elevation control and by simply moving the back of the Lead Sled FCX left or right to achieve approximate lateral alignment with the target. Also, the FCX is easily adjustable for length to accommodate virtually any rifle or shotgun.
Other changes that differ from previous such designs is the inclusion of a rubberized butt plate which is much more durable than those used in previous models, which are made of leather. The dual main beams of the FCX arc downward from the rear support to the main chassis To provide space for operating lever action rifles without the need to remove them from the rest.
My Lead Sled was FCX shipped with two front rest bags, a wide “U” shaped bag intended for wide forends and a narrow “V” shaped bag for thin forends. INITIALLY, I’ve installed the wide bag and have subsequently used it for every rifle test, including Those with slender forearms, with excellent results.

The FCX model also brings a shooting bag very well built in Cordura, which can be filled with sand. In addition to well-built, it has a very ergonomic design that fits perfectly in the rounded tray at the front of the rest. The capacity of this bag is up to 50 pounds of lead shot or sand. If you want, you can also use a bag of 25 pounds of lead shot, it will fit perfectly, and in most cases will be exactly what you will need regarding weight. After using the Caldwell DFT Shooting Rest with excellent results, I bought my FCX by referral from an old hunter friend. I had heard about it before, but I can not buy it because it was always out of stock. Well, since I have used the FCX for anything from my 10/22 Ruger to my Ithaca Mag 10 Nikon BTR scoped “Gobbler Gitter” & Remington 700 SFII Sendero 7mmRUM “Long Range Tack Driver”.I like it better than my DFT because of the “Joy Stick” and up, down, left, right, and fine tune control. The Caldwell shooting rest FCX takes all that fine adjustment making it all-in-one for you. Plus it comes with two styles of front rests wide & narrow for different stocks, as I mentioned before. Most of the time, I use it with 41lbs of lead shot. It holds the sled very well while using any caliber or gauge, including a CVA Wolf 50 cal muzzleloader.

Conclusion

My conclusion is simple: For me, this is the best gun rest (overall). Its ergonomics are excellent, and the front control arm makes it easy to get the rifle back on target after every shot. If you do not already own a Caldwell Lead Sled, take a close look at the FCX. You will not be disappointed, and soon you will wonder how you ever got along without it.

FAQ

How much adjustment will the Fire Control mechanism give me?

The control arm provides approximately 60 MOA or 5 feet of adjustment at 100 yards, according to the Caldwell shooting rest manual.

Coarse Elevation Tension Adjustments on your Fire Control Rest.

The entire front cradle block moves up and down on the coarse elevation ram. There is an internal nylon tipped set screw that can be adjusted to provide enough tension to support your gun even while the elevation lock knob is not locked in place. To adjust the tension, remove the coarse elevation lock knob (smaller knob on the front) and make small incremental adjustments to the set screw with a hex driver. Be careful not to overtighten the set screw. Proper adjustment will allow the rest to hold the weight of your gun without the lock knob being engaged and still provides smooth one hand adjustments to coarse elevation.

Control Arm Tension Adjustment.

Precise tension adjustments can be made to the control arm mechanism. Tension is calibrated in the manufacturing process, but over the coarse of regular use, additional adjustments may be required. Four nylon tipped set screws on the back side of the front cradle block can be adjusted to increase or decrease the tension on the control arm. It is important to keep all four screws equally tensioned and NOT to OVERTIGHTEN them. To make adjustments, back all four screws all the way out and inspect the nylon tips to be sure they are intact. Reinsert the screws gently until you feel them just make contact internally. Make small, quarter turn, incremental adjustments to all four screws keeping them in sync with each other until the desired tension is achieved.

What is the bennefit of the Fire Control Rest over other rests?

The Fire Contol is designed to provide you with a rock solid shooting platform for your rifle. The difference is in the Fire Control mechanism. Once your coarse elevation is set, and the front cradle is locked in place you can adjust the point of aim by just manipulating the control arm. Stop at any position, and the gun is held at that point of aim with no additional movements required. Unlike traditional shooting rests, this allows you to move the crosshairs to the EXACT position you want them, and you can keep your body fully relaxed. You won’t have to push, pull or lean on the gun to get that last micro adjustment. Being fully relaxed with a solidly supported rifle is the key to achieving the maximum accuracy potential of your gun.

Mentions

As not everything is a thousand wonders, the FCX set has a defect: the weight bag that comes with it does not have excellent quality. Therefore, I recommend that you look for a high-quality Lead Shot Bag.

Assembling

It’s very easy and straight forward. It will require only a few minutes.
